Pearl Jam were so into vinyl that they added scratches to Vitalogy. Candlebox: CD. Hanson: CD. Fountains of Wayne: CD. Those last three acts are all represented in the new group Tinted Windows. That's middle child Taylor Hanson on vocals.
Former Pumpkin James Iha on guitar. Fountain Adam Schlesinger on bass. And on the skins! Did you all pitch in on the writing? Adam, Taylor and I wrote songs separately and brought them in. We had demos, and we bashed them out, with Taylor trying to find the right key. We all wanted to hear Taylor with the loud guitars while keeping everything pop. That served as kind of a template for what we wrote. Though the prospect of fusing Cheap Trick and Fountains of Wayne together is more than enough to make the folks running Powerpopaholic squeal with joy and rightly so , it seems that Hanson and Iha are the odd men out this time around.
Really, no matter what way you slice it, Tinted Windows seems like the most natural union of likeminded musicians you can possibly imagine. Instead of coming off as a more mainstream New Pornographers, Schlesinger and co. To be fair to Tinted Windows, its parts are pretty impressive. Bassist Adam Schlesinger and drummer Bun E. Carlos have similarly impressive resumes with Fountains of Wayne and Cheap Trick, respectively; singer Taylor Hanson is the only one whose career does not invite the same kind of respect, and even his presence adds interest, if only for the strangeness of the interaction between his background in teen pop and the backgrounds of his new bandmates.
There is no doubt, then, that Tinted Windows makes for an intriguing prospect. But the actual product has little in common with the past achievements of the bandmembers.
