Tool lateralus lyrics meaning

General Comment Hey guys, awesome interpretations so far. I think it's great seein what other people think.

Anyway, on to the interpretation. To begin with, I wanna clear up an earlier post. Colsy said the title was pronounced "Lateral-Us" A mistake i made too for a long time but it's really pronounced "Ladder-alice" say it and it makes sense, i found this in the FAQ from toolshed.

Instead of "Side of Us", i think the song deals with lateral parts the bigger picture, as maynard put it.

Anyway, it deals with the ability to have a physical life, as well as a spiritual one In whatever god you chose to believe in. Yet he retracts these statements by talking about "OVER thinking, and OVER analyzing" saying that there is a balance in spirit and body, don't push either ot the extreme, because you'll become separate humans, leading a LATERAL life Then he speaks about reaching out to embrace the random The next part seems to be my strongest point of backing.

Next he backs my statement again. He speaks of 'keeping his feet on the ground', yet he also talks about an enlightenment of somekind 'opening wide to suck it in and feeling it move across his skin'. He wants that connection of body and spirit, as everyone does. He'll continue to connect the 2 to push the boundaries and enlighten himself "Spiral out, keep going Anyway, continue writin posts, i love to read em, and again this is only my opinion.

There was an error. Mediumcore0Tool0Fan on March 28, Beyond that, I also came to many of the conclusions madson did. You both created a wonderful interpretation of this song. Great work Guys Just want u all to see this VId This song is Mathematically Related as well!!!! Dude, if people label you, then they're douchebags and they don't deserve you and you're time if you're a good person.

People label me and look at me as a freak everyday, but I do my best at not letting it get to me. It does, at times, but I know if I keep my eyes on the prize, Heaven or at least the utopia after death, it'll all make sense. I'm "Christian", but I have no denomination. All I know is what I need to know. I know that the whole "higher power" thing makes absolutely no sense at this point in my life, but I feel it's not supposed to.

It wouldn't be called Faith if there was proof. Basically keep who you are, who you aren't, and where you want to go in your mind and you'll get there. If some things about you need to change, change them. If life was easy it wouldn't be worth living. I love your interpretation madson. I have a suggestion if it's not too presumptuous. Read "The Kybalion" then the "Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreunz" if you haven't already, and I bet you glean even more insight into what Maynard was talking about So as has been said, don't be 2 dimensional.

Make your own decisions from within, not what other people tell you to believe, and to keep growing on what you've learned. If everyone believed the same thing, then we wouldn't be any different than robots, which is what the future could hold for us humans unless we can keep evolving.

Shadowx on January 11, Your interpretation is flawless in terms of everything, I just feel I need to mention something. The "Red and Yellow" may link to something.

They mention something along the lines of "King in Yellow, Queen in Red. The Queen In Red was from Through the Looking Glass, her environment around her was always moving, and she had to run in order to keep up with it.

This represents the ideology of Evolution and keeping up with the proceeding times. In short, the Red represents ideologies of science and some religion in terms of logic; while the Yellow may represent society and religious influence on a person's personality. DarkWings on March 21, It is actually a symbol of growth without changing shape. So I figured the line "swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human" could pertain to growing as a person and becoming more than what you are but remaining a human being staying in the same form or appearance SomeDrummerGuy on February 09, I totally agree with your opinion!

And particularly with the part when you say that balance and evolution between body and mind makes you feel like a god but still be a human And I would something about this part : With my feet upon the ground I lose myself Between the sounds and open wide to suck it in I feel it move across my skin I think this part talks about the music itself not the song, but music in general I think it means that music is a good way to push you spiritual side, how powerful it can be if you open your mind and really enters into it.

All the emotions you can feel while listening music General Comment This is one of the most brilliant songs ever written. Like a complex novel, it operates on many levels, but the central theme of the song is evolution, both personal and on the grand scale.

First we'll examine the music itself. As the song progresses, those rhythms become more tribal, then more mechanical, till near the end we hear what sounds like robots in a factory. Thus, the music is about the evolution of the human species to the point where we are either replaced by machines or become machines ourselves.

Now, the lyrics reinforce this theme on a few ways. The song starts out: "Black then white are all I see in my infancy, red and yellow then came to be reaching out to me, let's me see.

Babies see in black and white, with their ability to distinguish colors arising as they age. But this is also true of the human species in a philosophical and spiritual sense. Edward O. Wilson has written about how the most primitive tribes have words only for black and white; the next most advanced tribes have words for red and yellow, on up to the point where we recognize there is a near infinite color spectrum, which the most advanced cultures recognize.

Thus, the most morally developed beings recognize that issues can never be easily divided into black and white; that's much too simplistic. There are, of course, people who still see moral issues in black and white, but they are throwbacks to our primitive heritage.

So as technology advances, if we do not evolve morally too, we lose our connection to nature more and more and become little more than machines. So spiral out, and keep going. You may just go where no one's been. This is that pattern.

The pattern continues in other parts of the verse and the song. The drum beats also follow that pattern. The singing in the song starts at approximately 1. This number is the Golden Ratio, or the divine proportion. It is found in all forms of life and nature throughout the universe. This number is closely related to the Fibonacci Sequence mathematically. This all may seem kind of random. Let me explain.

The idea of the song is spiraling out, riding the spiral, etc. The entire song is based on the idea that our divinity and the way we should live is like a spiral, and we should ride it. In other words, over-thinking and overanalyzing separate the body from the mind.

Our body, mind, and soul should be one. When the Fibonacci Sequence is graphed out, it is represented as a slowly expanding spiral. As everyone said, this is a wonderful song, and there's so many things to say about it. However, I agree with the idea that the main message of this song is that we should enjoy the song as a whole instead of trying to decompose it.

I spent hours trying to listen to every subtilities in the music and lyrics of this song, and the times when I enjoy it the most are the times when I just listen it for the fun of it, as a whole, without "overanalysing". You can really feel some rage to live coming out of this song. Still, it is Tool, and it's always fun to try to overanalyse their songs. Now something got my attention in the beginning of the song.

I didn't have time to give it much thought, but if you want to try that approach, it's up to you all. Black then white are all I see in my infancy. Many of the interpretation I've read about this part talks about the perception of a newborn, good vs evil, or our reaction to something new and shocking, and much more.

There have been many posts about those, so feel free to scroll up if you want to read 'em. My question was as follow: Black and white at first, I understand. Then colors: Red and yellow. But why not blue? If they want to talk about our perception or something similar, then black, white, and the primary colors would be a pretty nice way to metaphorise it.

But why forget blue? Dont tell me it's because they couldn't fit it in. They just made a song following the Fibonacci sequence. If they wanted to fit blue in, I'm pretty sure they would have managed to do it.

Starting from that question, I think I can agree with the opinions that they refer to the beginning of the life of a newborn, but not that of a child. I think they refer to the human race as a whole. I think those colors refers to the first nations of the earth. First, black: african, then white: european. Red and yellow then came to be, as native americans and asians. Many interpretations say this song could refer to our evolution as beings. I think the song could refer to our evolution as a race, as a collective.

Anyway, as I said, I didn't take the time to give it much toughts. If someone can develop on this idea, post it! I'd be interested to see what can come out of it. Have fun! Well, to start, I must say that this song is brilliant. Tool is about more than just the lyrics, the whole thing fits together perfectly.

Right, on with the interpretation: Well, first off, we have the Fibonacci sequence and golden ratio in the song. That is obvious to anyone who has read any review of the song And some others. But what of the lyrics? Personally, the first few words have made me think a lot of different things. Black and white are all I see in my infancy. Referring to the idealism of binary opposites Good and evil, Light and Dark, Boy and Girl Etc , the song can have many meanings. Using the most common version, the lyrics mean: Good and evil are illusions, it is childish, infantile.

But the next part is different: Red and Yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, lets me see. Means something along the lines of: But as time progressed, I was blessed with a multi-coloured view and could see more than just good and evil, but the colour was not quite complete, and so I must Spiral out to find the full picture.

A little later in the song he says Spiral out once or twice Now, already we can see that this song is more than just a song. It is a poem of epic proportion. William Wordsworth? William Shakespeare? Meet Maynard James Keenan, a poet of legend. Above, Beyond and Below are all his imagination, beyond the lines of reason. I think this is about the painting of life, the brilliant portrait of existence. We have to completely humble ourselves to the level of a child.

He is saying there must be a return to innocence; all of the unnecessary weight in life must be eradicated. His imagery of the oceans and waters is an allusion to baptism. A thorough cleansing is necessary for change, but with change comes reward. Perseverance breeds greatness. Keenan breaks down in the end of the song. He lets out a passionate scream — I envision him falling to his knees with his hands on his head.

He knows he must let go, has to let go. Change is never easy, but he has to try. A grudge begins in reason but transforms into a powerful entity capable of destroying lives.

The only way to escape the endless spiral of increasing desperation to control everything around us is to choose to change. No matter how attractive the crown is, we need to take it off.

In the end, it is up to us…it always has been. I think this is a great paper! This is awesome, thanks for sharing! I agree it is awesome! Great job I think you hit the nail on the head with that! Thanks so much for sharing!!!! Working Tool into a school paper, kudos man. I legit made an account JUST to reply to this comment. That was the most well-written meaning of a song I've ever read. I was playing the song while reading this and I truly felt something powerful.

Let's transmutate these leaden grudges into gold. The crown chakra allows for the experiences of unity and universal connectedness, as well as the integration of the whole. You are wearing the grudgd literally as your crown chakra. Also, someone else had brought up the idea of Saturn's full revolution taking about 30 Earth years So if it picks you up like a child, I think he's saying you pick this grudge up as a child and when Saturn comes back around in 30 years, it will have been just the right amount of time to have you get to the point where it is metaphorically dragging you down like a stone--"to consume you till you choose to let this go" ian on March 10, General Comment Maynard once said he used his music to get out frustrations he had of his past, and this I believe is him letting his past go.

About his Family life, his look on other people, and even God. He really sees his life of anger leading him no where. Tool's earlier records showed Maynard's and the bend's anger and frustrations to the point where they were called an anti religious band by many. In ways they were Well Lateralus came and showed us a new side. Maynard sees the problem of hate and grudges, and the "Prison cell" it puts you in. As Saturn comes back around to show him everything, he sees it will consume him and spit him out until he chooses to let it go.

The ending is so powerful. I just picture Maynard thinking of all the things he's mad about, and not just letting them go, but literally changing his mind set as he screams his heart out. This song is an utter masterpiece. Plugged in online didn't give this album enough credit, cause I see more Christian lyrics in this song alone than I do in some songs on Christian Radio.

Funny actually. My opinion though -Zach indeed on March 19, Link. No Replies Log in to reply. General Comment People use grudges as a means of control and supremacy, to make other people feel lesser.

Resentment is futile. General Comment Here is my interpretation of 'The Grudge' "Crown of negativity" The first thing that pops into my head is Jesus' crown of thorns, a burden. The crown is thereby also a symbol of religion — but this is a negative symbol. Because these days Christianity is a controlling power, which has decided for us what we will and will not tolerate.

We carry the crown on our heads, the highest place of our body, and it overshadows everything else. We stamp other people, judging them and refuse to forgive them. This hatred of a foreign party - another person, another religion, another culture - most people have to maintain. Many people clutch their grudge as if it were a cornerstone, everything their unity if is a group of people is build on.

In such cases we always try to justify denials. We cultivate our hatred and dare not to let it go, because we are afraid to make mistakes.

So we put ourselves in a prison cell of ultimatum. The most interesting part of the song deals with Saturn. After a little research has been up to me that everything in the song forms a synthesis. First, it takes Saturn about 29 years to go round the sun. So the choice is between Capricorn and Aries. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn Saturn is the creator of civilization and the social order, representing authority.

Capricorn is stubborn, cautious and disciplined. Aries is ruled by Mars Mars usually associated with strength, spontaneity and energy. Aries is bold and impulsive. The song is the third single and title track of their third studio album Lateralus. Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Do you contend with shadows? Do you move in a kind of sleep?
