Students perform in larger roles on the main stage of the Philip Chosky Theater and gain exposure to on-camera work for film and television. Students also take classes that prepare them for the business aspects of entering the profession. Showcase provides all students with the opportunity to perform before industry professionals in New York, LA and Pittsburgh. Students in the School of Drama Acting and Music Theater Option have many opportunities for hands-on learning and collaborative projects throughout the year, in addition to regular course and production work.
Through this partnership, students work with professional musical theater leaders to create and present a new musical work. Vocal performance majors also study Italian, French, and German, as well as English language diction; junior and senior year recitals include repertoire in all four languages. While there is close collaboration between the School of Music and the designers of the School of Drama, it is important to note that the vocal performance major in the School of Music is a separate program of study from the music theater major in the School of Drama.
Talented young singers and actors may wish to apply to both programs with separate auditioning processes for each. Carnegie Mellon courses are measured in units rather than credits or credit hours, with three units equaling a standard credit. There are no out-of-pocket expenses to participate in the Cheerleading Program; everything that is essential is provided by the athletics department.
The main goal of the cheerleading program is to provide spirit at games. Members of the team will use crowd involving chants and cheers with signs and will perform jumps, dance routines, stunts, pyramids and basket tosses when appropriate, if applicable. All skills regardless of experience will be re-taught starting at the most basic level to ensure proper knowledge, technique, and safety.
